Black History Month invites us to celebrate the achievements and educate ourselves about the contributions of African Americans. This February, TTAR will host a range of events designed to engage the community through unique story walks and a creative expressions contest reception, capturing the essence of Black History Month .

Engaging Story Walks: Nature Meets History

For the entire month of February, the Osprey Marsh in Marion, and Dunseith Gardens in Mattapoisett, will showcase Black History Month Story Walks™.

In Marion, you will learn about Ernest Everett Just (August 14, 1883 – October 27, 1941), a pioneering biologist, academic, and science writer who spent time researching at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) at Woods Hole.

In Mattapoisett, you will learn about author, poet, and activist Langston Hughes (February 1, 1901 – May 22, 1967). Hughes is one of the earliest innovators of the literary form called jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance.

Creative Expressions Contest Reception: A Celebration of Talent

The Black History Month Creative Expressions Contest Reception will take place on February 8, 2025, at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library from 2 to 4 PM. This event will showcase artwork from students attending or living in the Tri-Town with this year's theme of African American's and Labor.

Family-Friendly Story Times

For families with young children, the Black History Month Story Time with the Excellent Family is a not-to-miss event! Happening on February 8, 2025, at the Marion Music Hall from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, this event invites children and their caretakers to listen to engaging stories that celebrate African American culture and contributions and to do a small craft.

On February 22 from 11 AM to 12 PM, join Kendal Smiley at the Rochester Women's Club for another story time and craft. Thank you to the RWC for allowing us to use their space.

Connecting Nature, Education, and Community

Throughout February, we not only commemorate Black History Month but also engage in important discussions about our environment. The Tidepooling with Sippican Lands Trust event at Brainard Marsh, scheduled for February 15, 2025, is an excellent example of blending scientific exploration with cultural learning. Participants will explore local marine life while discussing the research of Ernest Everett Just.

February will be a celebration of heritage, creativity, and community connection. We look forward to seeing you at our events!
